Schererville
 Schererville: Crossroads of the Nation
Long before
Indiana became a state, long before the founding of Schererville, people
called this place the "Crossroads." The name was appropriate, for several
Indian trails that later became routes for the wagons of settlers traveling
west intersected here. One of those settlers was Nicholas Scherer, who arrived
in the U.S. from Germany in 1846. When he came to this place at the southern
tip of Lake Michigan in 1866, he founded the community that bears his name.
Today, trails still cross at Schererville, the modern trails of a motorized
society, U.S. Highways 41 and 30. Nearby are newer trails, I-80/94 and I-65.
All these are primary transcontinental routes and gives Schererville its
slogan: "Crossroads of the Nation."
Schererville
boasts a variety of excellent recreational facilities, including a sports
complex, two golf courses, and a race track. The Schererville Park Department
maintains 18 parks and offers wide-ranging activities such as exercise and
aerobics programs, tennis and soccer. The community's proximity to Indiana
Dunes State Park on the shores of Lake Michigan enhance its recreational
opportunities.
The Lake
Central School Corporation serves some 7,810 Schererville area students. It
operates a high school, two middle schools, and six kindergarten through fifth
elementary schools. These students come from the rapidly growing communities of
Schererville, Dyer, St. John and St. John Township. To accommodate continuing
growth, the school system has added to existing school buildings and is
planning construction of a seventh elementary school in the near future. The
area also has several private and parochial schools that provide excellent
educational programs. Several well-known institutions for higher education for
higher education are nearby. These include Purdue Calumet, Hammond; Calumet
College, Whiting; Indiana University Northwest, Gary; and Valparaiso
University, Valparaiso, Hyles Anderson College, Crown Point.
Five
hospitals provide high quality health care and treatment to the Schererville
area. These are St. Margaret Mercy Health Care South Campus, St. Anthony
Medical Center, Munster Community Hospital, Methodist Hospital, and Southlake
Center for Mental Health Care. A variety of clinics also offer medical and
dental services.
Dyer

The town of
Dyer is located along the Illinois state line, 15 miles south of Lake Michigan,
with Chicago an easy drive of 30 miles. Incorporated in 1910, it has
remained basically residential with related business and commercial service
providers nearby, governed by a five-member Town Council. Supplementing the
Town Council are a three-member Metropolitan Police Commission, an Economic
Commission and a Recycling Committee.
A majority of
Dyer's residents are employed in the Calumet region. Located in northern
Lake County, Dyer is generally included as a part of the Chicago Metropolitan
area, wich is heavily industrialized and provides a vast range of employment
for our residents. The larger industries in this region are related to steel
production and fabrication, refining of petroleum and manufacturing of
automotive products.
Munster

The beautiful
homes, excellent schools, and attractive parks of Munster are there due to
careful planning. Rigid zoning, construction, and landscaping requirements
continue to guide both residential and industrial development. As a result,
Munster is enviably beautiful and serene, with a sense of real seclusion
despite its location in busy northwest Indiana.
Interstate
80/94 spans the community's northern boundary, providing direct access to
the huge metropolitan Chicago market, as well as ease of travel to all points
in the nation.
Approximately
20,000 people make Munster their home. More than half are executives and
professionals. As a result, much is expected of the town and much is achieved.
For example, Munster's multi-million dollar Center for the Visual and
Performing Arts has become a cultural focal point for residents in Munster and
neighboring communities. The Center is home to the Northwest Indiana Symphony
Orchestra and the Northern Indiana Arts Association. Offices of the Munster
Chamber of Commerce, Munster Cable studio, and Theatre at the Center are also
located in the Center.
Shopping is
always conveniently near to Munster homes, situated along several major
arteries that crisscross the community. Munster's beautiful parks and its
proximity to the Indiana Dunes State Park and National Lakeshore assures
residents a myriad of opportunities for healthful outdoor activity and
recreational. The nearness of Chicago allows residents to frequent the city's
vast array of entertainment, cultural, and professional sports attractions. In
every way, life in Munster is simply splendid.
